The Benefits of Coding Lessons for Children

Coding is a necessary skill to have in the digital age and can help your child to leverage greater opportunities in the future. Aside from digital literacy, coding also allows children to enhance many of their transferable skills like problem solving, creative thinking and resilience.

In this post that I’ve put together with a private school in Cheshire, we shall explore each of these benefits in more detail.

Employability

Coding skills are in high demand. Not just here, but all over the world. One of the main benefits of course is that your child will have a broader skill set and therefore have access to a greater variety of opportunities when they leave school. It also helps them to future proof themselves as the job market is set to be very different by the year 2030 and 75% of all jobs will require some level of advanced digital skill.

An Understanding of The Digital World

Another is their ability to understand and utilise modern technology. Everything is going digital and knowing code means that children can understand and interact with the world around them.

Problem Solving

As briefly touched on earlier, coding relies on several key transferable skills. Problem Solving is one of them and is one that your child can work on when applying what they have learned to create their own coding creations in class.

Resilience

As with anything that they want, children must exercise resilience and patience. When coding, it’s likely that the process won’t be straightforward, and they will come across obstacles. They will need to remain calm, pick themselves up and take these challenges in their stride.

As I’ve established, coding is vital for children to learn. While you may not have a clue about coding, there are several ways that you can help them in this area. Here are some of our suggestions below:

  • Introduce your child to coding games - Coding games are a fun and interactive means for children to learn about code. They can even work on projects of their own whilst learning the basics.
  • Start with an easy programming language - Python and Scratch are our recommendations for beginners.
  • Consider online lessons or a coding summer camp.

I hope that this post gave you a little more insight into coding and how you can support your child with their computing lessons at school. For more useful parenting resources, be sure to have a look at my other blogs.
