Energy-Efficient Plumbing Upgrades for Your Home

Saving energy has enormous positive effects on the natural world. Improving the energy efficiency of your house or workplace can be done in a variety of ways, some of which are straightforward and others of which are more involved.

There is always room for improvement in the plumbing systems of both homes and businesses. Saving money on utilities is just one of many benefits of upgrading an inefficient plumbing system. Maintaining both old and new plumbing fixtures is an easy way for homeowners to cut down on water and energy waste.

Plumber

Get the most out of your home or business's plumbing system by implementing these easy steps.

Low-flow fixtures

One of the easiest ways to reduce your water consumption is to install low-flow fixtures.

These fixtures use less water than traditional fixtures, which can save you money on your water bill. For example, low-flow showerheads can reduce water usage by as much as 50%.

Low-flow toilets also use less water per flush, which can save thousands of gallons of water each year.

Tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand, saving electricity. The tankless machine heats cold water using gas or electricity, supplying hot water until you turn off the tap. This makes them instantaneous or demand-type water heaters.

Saving energy saves money. Tankless water heaters pay for themselves in a few years, especially in high-energy areas.

Tankless water heaters are compact since they don't have a storage tank, making them ideal for small homes.

As long as the tap is running, tankless water heaters can provide hot water constantly. In principle, a tankless water heater may let you take a hot shower without becoming cold. Tankless water heaters can save you up to 40% on your water heating costs.

Solar water heaters

Electric water heaters are a major contributor to high electricity costs, therefore switching to more cost-effective and environmentally friendly heating options would undoubtedly reduce monthly electricity expenses. It is rational, then, to seek out options for heating water that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Investing in solar water heaters is one approach to reduce the enormous electricity expenses caused by water heating. Solar water heaters are an economical and environmentally friendly way to heat water, and they come with a number of other benefits as well.

These systems use the sun's energy to heat water, which can save you money on your energy bills. Solar water heaters are especially effective in warmer climates.

Insulation

Insulation helps prevent condensation that could damage plumbing fittings and pipes when their surfaces are cooler than the ambient air. Condensation may seem like a far-off problem, but it actually happens rather frequently, especially in situations where cold water pipes are exposed to warm, humid air.

Condensation can be reduced or eliminated completely by installing insulation on cold water pipes, which also reduces the likelihood of CUI occurring.

Insulating your pipes can help prevent heat loss and save energy. Insulating your hot water tank can also help keep the water hot longer, reducing the need to reheat it.

Water-saving devices

Another way to reduce your water consumption is to install water-saving devices, such as faucet aerators and shower flow restrictors.

These devices can reduce the amount of water that flows through your fixtures, which can help you save money on your water bill.

Leak detection systems

Leaks can waste a lot of water and money. Installing a leak detection system can help you detect leaks early and prevent them from becoming a major problem.

Water leak detection systems track water flow through your home's pipes. They use ultrasonic or mechanical turbines with strategically placed sensors. Use moisture-sensing leak detectors at point-of-use, under-sink, or near water-intensive equipment. Consider water-monitoring systems to protect the whole house.

Leak-alerting audio-only devices are available. Most reactive smart leak-detecting systems have shut-off valves. These systems close the valve when they detect irregular water usage.

Leak detection valves should be installed at your home's water main. This guarantees that they shut off all water-using equipment to prevent catastrophic damage. Leak detection systems can detect frozen pipes, which might fracture or explode, using temperature sensors.

Smart technology

Smart technology can help you monitor and control your water usage.

Automatic flushing, overflow protection, water savings, a built-in deodorizer, sensor-enabled industrial LED lighting, built-in cleaners, and much more are just some of the features included in today's smart toilets. These high-tech commodes are quickly becoming standard in modern households.

Moreover, you can install a smart water meter that tracks your water usage and sends the data to your smartphone.

You can also install smart irrigation systems that can be controlled from your phone, helping you save water by only watering your lawn when it needs it.

Graywater systems

Graywater systems recycle water from sinks, showers, and washing machines to use for irrigation, toilet flushing, and other non-potable uses. This can help you save money on your water bill and conserve resources.

When used as intended, such as for irrigation of grass, decorative plants, or trees, greywater offers no threat (so long as the appropriate cleaning agents and personal care items are used).

When released into water systems, greywater carries with it a host of contaminants, including bits of dirt, food, grease, and hair. But plants can use them as fertilizers and sources of vital nutrients. As a result, greywater is an even more cost-effective alternative to potable water for agricultural uses.

Conclusion

There are many energy-efficient plumbing upgrades that can help you save money and conserve resources. Some of the most effective upgrades include low-flow fixtures, tankless water heaters, solar water heaters, insulation, water-saving devices, leak detection systems, smart technology, and gray water systems.

By taking advantage of these upgrades, you can reduce your energy consumption and lower your bills. Remember, small changes can make a big difference in the long run, and it is essential to consider these upgrades when building or remodeling your home.

Consult with a professional plumber at Easefix to assess your home and help you decide which upgrades will be most beneficial for you.

Tips On How To Improve Your Home On A Budget

From time to time, everyone fancies sprucing up their home a bit, but buying new furniture or paying for work can often be quite costly. There are many easier ways to improve or change your home without breaking the bank. They just need a bit of time!

Before you get started, consider what your budget will be. Also, consider how much time you have available as some of these tasks can take quite a while. If you only have a few hours on weekends, or if you want to spend as little as possible (and still get good results), this article can give you some ideas for where to get started.

1. Use Paint

paint

If you have the time and energy, painting your walls is one of the best ways to update a room without spending much money. Just make sure you choose colours that go well with the existing furniture because they are harder to change. Browse samples of colours and test them on your walls first to make sure you’ve got the right match.

2. Change Lightbulbs

You may not be able to afford new lamps and fixtures right away, but replacing light bulbs is easy and cheap — and it'll still make a big difference in the room's appearance too! If you have old-fashioned incandescent bulbs, consider upgrading them for newer LED versions instead — they're more efficient, last longer and look cooler too!

3. Add Mirrors

Mirrors can make small spaces feel bigger by reflecting light around the room or adding interesting visual features with unique shapes or colours. And if you want to add some decor accents without breaking the bank, invest in some inexpensive wall decals instead. You can find plenty of options on sites like Amazon for reasonable prices — just search for "mirror wall decal" or something similar.

4. Replace Hardware

Swap out old hardware and knobs/handles. Old hardware looks dated, so swap out your old handles and knobs for some shiny new ones that will give your cabinets a fresh appearance without breaking the bank.

5. Rearrange Furniture

Rearrange your room to give it a different feel and create or take away space. If you're looking for something different than what you currently have, try rearranging existing pieces or adding new pieces to the room. Having a space plan is the key to creating a functional space. Rearranging can drastically change a room - you’d be surprised how different it can look!

6. Reupholster Furniture

If your furniture is looking a bit worse for wear, but you want to keep hold of it or can’t afford new pieces, consider reupholstery as an option. It can bring old furniture back to life and completely change its style. You can work with upholsterers to ensure the piece is designed to your perfection and matches the rest of your home but for a cheaper option check out videos on YouTube and do it yourself. Take a look at before and after pictures of reupholstery work to get some inspiration!

7. Add Some Greenery

plant at home

Adding plants around the home can instantly freshen up any room. They also help clean the air and reduce noise pollution, so they're great for your health too. Consider adding some foliage to your windowsill or a small pot of flowers on the kitchen table. Having a few different plants in the living area will give the space an overall clean and inviting vibe, while also helping to purify the air.

8. Organise Your Space

If you have clutter in your house, it can quickly become overwhelming and create an unpleasant environment. Get rid of things you don't need and put things away so they're out of sight (or at least out of mind). This will make cleaning easier too! A decluttered environment will lead to a calmer mind. Making sure everything has a home and is organised will make life run more smoothly.

9. Paint Your Woodwork

We all tend to focus on painting walls, but painting woodwork can really upgrade a room. If you have wooden furniture in any room of your house then painting it with white paint will bring new life into the space instantly. It's also easy enough to do yourself - just grab some paint brushes and rollers and the right paint.

With a few timely and affordable touches, you can give your home a whole new look without breaking the bank!

10. Move and Swap Around your Accessories

As well as furniture, moving smaller things around can be a nice change. Try rearranging candles, photo frames, lamps and other smaller details. New cushions and throws can spruce up your sofas and new bedding can improve the bedroom. Never underestimate the power of small changes.

Hopefully, this guide has given you some inspiration for how to improve your home on a budget! Remember, small changes can make a big difference so give any of these a go, you won’t regret it.

Motorhome Destinations For Young Families

For first time motorhome holidaymakers and even fanatics, it’s important to be prepared when it comes to taking the little ones away. Vehicle safety must be up to scratch, destinations must be planned that all the family can enjoy and don’t forget to compare motorhome insurance and get covered before you set off.

So I’ve put together a list of some of the best motorhome destinations in the UK for young families to take the stress away from planning your next route. Although us Brits are spoilt for choice with all of the glorious campsites we have on offer, keeping the kids entertained is another thing.

motorhomes

Most of our stress comes down to what to pack and where to go, but we should also consider how to keep the kids entertained and what facilities will be available when we pitch up.

A family friendly campsite should include the following:

Electricity/powered sites
Hot showers
Toilets/compostable toilets
Kitchen/laundrette facilities
Baby changing units
Shops/cafés
On-site entertainment/amenities
Playgrounds/outdoor spaces for children
Heating facilities e.g. stoves or portable heaters
Self catering facilities

The campsites I’ve featured have been carefully selected due to featuring some of, if not all of the amenities you should look out for when it comes to your next family getaway, so you can book your stay with ease.

Bargoed Farm, Ceredigion

This friendly and popular motorhome campsite offers up the very best of welsh charm, all in one place. Scoring rave reviews from locals and visitors, the site has its own farm shop and bistro, so the whole family can try out local delicacies for lunch and fewer meals need to be prepped for. Once lunch is out the way, visit The Moody Calf Play Barn which is on-site and combines outdoor and indoor soft-play, giving you the chance to put your feet up whilst the kids are enjoying themselves.

The award-winning site also offers 50 hardstanding pitches - some of which are complete with a private hot tub. Although, these plots do come at an extra cost and are easily snapped up by adults looking to be catered for too. Our advice is to book way in advance if you’re after a spot of luxury!

Skegness Sands

With fantastic beaches and endless arcades and entertainment at your feet, Skegness Sands is the ultimate getaway for young families. When the kids aren’t enjoying the indoor heated pool at the resort, they can play on the spacious park grounds for hours on end. This particular motorhome park is ideal for larger families too, with the option to secure a ‘super pitch’ for extra large motorhome vehicles.

Dornafield, Devon

Located in the beautiful area of Devon, Dornafield Motorhome park is home to blue skies and magnificent nature trails. Best known for its family friendly facilities, Dornafield has on-site entertainment, an indoor games room, and a baby bathing unit and changing facility. There are plenty of activities to do off-site too, with the Stover Country Park and Nature Reserve being one of the most popular places to visit within the park's reach. Perfect for active families who enjoy long walks and wildlife spotting.

Wentor, Shropshire

For a quieter family escape, The Green Caravan Park in Wentor boasts breathtaking scenery and the calm flowing Onny River. Taking a paddle in the shallow river can be easily supervised and taking time out in this tranquil setting will only set you back around £14 for a pitch (based on a family of four). If fuss free holidaying and outstanding beauty is on the agenda, then this is the location for your young family.

Grouse Hill Camping, Whitby

Grouse Hill is a great campervan campsite for children, due to its large play area and cycle paths. What’s even better about this location is that it’s just a stone's throw away from Robin Hood Bay in Whitby - home to fresh seaside air, famous fish and chips at The Magpie Cafe, and Dracula, of course! The Whitby Vampire Curse Treasure Trail is a firm favourite for young families, but the idyllic seaside town has so much more to offer the kids. When you drive into Whitby’s beachfront, you’ll be greeted by a trail of trampolines, set up for supervised bounces by the beach.

Some of the amenities you will find back at camp include, an on-site shop, pub, laundry room and ironing facilities, wifi, family washrooms, and a huge 175 pitches!

Newperran Holiday Park, Newquay

Next up is a motorhome hotpot based in Newquay. The award-winning Newperran Holiday Park is the epitome of the Cornish countryside, with sea views and rolling hillsides. The family perks at this site are endless too - with a heated indoor pool, separate children’s pool, adventure playground, large games room, and even a skatepark! The activity doesn't stop here for kids either, beaches nearby offer up surf lessons, water sports sessions, and more! Once everyone has worked up an appetite on their day out, you can head to the camp's Cottage Inn Restaurant for an easy bite.

Lady’s Mile Holiday Park, Devon

Devon may have already made our list, but that’s because it’s a motorhome hotspot, and Lady’s Mile Holiday Park is no exception! This is another award-winning caravan and motorhome park, with impressive heated swimming pools and flumes. Designed with kids in mind, the park even has a ‘Discover Active’ kids club, a soft play area for younger tots, and an adventure playground for older children.

Everything’s been thought of at this campsite, even the parents! Lively evening entertainment is on regularly and the bar is open for a nightcap following an energetic day. The gym and spa facilities are also on stand-by to help you relax throughout your stay.

You could stay forever in this magnificent motorhome location, which has a dog-friendly approach, fully serviced super-pitches, and stunning views to take in. Reviews also mention the fabulous customer service you’ll find at Lady’s Mile.

Tattershall Lakes, Lincolnshire

Located in the lovely Lincolnshire countryside, Tatthershall Lakes is an action-packed motorhome destination to say the least. It’s got an outdoor lido, a splash pad for kids, an indoor pool, and plenty of other facilities, including well-equipped bars and an arcade centre. Adventure is hard to miss here, with watersports like canoeing and jet-skiing available on the stunning waterscapes. There’s even a brand new zip wire adventure available to guests!

If certain members of the family prefer a more laid-back way of life, there are numerous bars and restaurants to visit, and more relaxed activities available such as crazy golf and archery.

Campervan and motorhome holidays should allow the whole family to unwind and have fun and these must-visit destinations have something for everyone. If you are looking for great family campsites though check out this post on the best campsites for families in the UK.

Making Sense Of Heart Tests: A Guide To Choosing The Right One For Your Needs

Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, and early detection and diagnosis are crucial in managing and preventing this condition. Many tests are available to assess heart health, but it can be difficult to know which test is right for you. This article has some of the most common heart tests and provides guidance on choosing the right test for your needs.

heart tests

Blood Tests

Blood tests are often used to assess heart health by measuring levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and other lipids in the blood. High levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are major risk factors for heart disease. Blood tests can also measure C-reactive protein levels (CRP), a marker of inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a contributing factor to heart disease.

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)

An ECG is a non-invasive test that measures the heart's electrical activity. It can detect heart rhythm problems, such as atrial fibrillation, and show if the heart is enlarged or damaged. An ECG can also help detect a heart attack or other acute coronary syndrome.

Stress Tests

A stress test assesses how well the heart functions during physical activity. This test can show if there is a lack of blood flow to the heart, indicating the presence of narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. Stress tests can be performed on a treadmill or with a medication that simulates the effects of exercise on the heart.

Cardiac CT

Cardiac computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive test that uses X-rays to create detailed images of the heart and its structures. It can detect narrowed or blocked coronary arteries and can also detect plaque in the coronary arteries. This test is typically done in people with symptoms of heart disease or those at high risk of developing heart disease. Cardiac CT scan vs angiogram; what's the difference? An angiogram involves putting a catheter into the heart through the groin or wrist, while a cardiac CT scan is non-invasive.

Cardiac MRI

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive test that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the heart and its structures. It can detect problems with the heart's valves, such as leaky or narrowed valves, and show if the heart is enlarged or damaged. Cardiac MRI is particularly useful for evaluating the heart's function and detecting heart muscle damage.

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram, also known as an ultrasound of the heart, is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves to create a detailed picture of the heart and its structures. An echocardiogram is a painless and safe test with no known risks or side effects. It is also useful in detecting problems that other tests may not see. This test can be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for heart disease or to see how well the heart functions after surgery.

Key Takeaway

When choosing a heart test, it's important to consider your individual risk factors for heart disease and any symptoms you may be experiencing. If you have a family history of heart disease or other risk factors, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, your doctor may recommend a blood test or an ECG. If you are experiencing symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, your doctor may recommend a stress test or an echocardiogram. Any test chosen is usually at the discretion of your doctor.

6 Simple Style Tips Every Woman Must Know

For many women, looking stylish while feeling fabulous can be challenging. If you're struggling to develop your own sense of style, here are six tips to help you revolutionise not only your wardrobe and your styling skills but also how you carry yourself daily.

woman with shopping bags

Develop a positive mindset

Dressing well requires hard work, patience, and plenty of practice. Even with numerous helpful resources and fashion advice, the whole endeavour can be highly overwhelming. Be gentle with yourself and change your mindset. Go out of your comfort zone, and be confident with your choices.

Declutter your wardrobe

One essential thing you must do right away is to clean up your closet. Identify the items you want to keep and organise them accordingly. Choose clothing that makes you feel good and those that you actually wear. Depending on your needs and preferences, you can sell or donate the remaining pieces. Decluttering your wardrobe can help you determine the fashion style that you're most comfortable with and gravitate to.

Embrace your shape

When cleaning up your closet, only keep clothing that fits you well. No matter how trendy oversized pieces are, they can be unflattering and uncomfortable. Select designs that best highlight your figure. Remember that your clothes need to complement your body shape, not the other way around. Work with a great tailor who can accommodate your clothing needs and get the job done efficiently. Wearing garments that fit you perfectly will make you look put together and increase your confidence.

Know your colours

Aside from choosing clothes that suit your figure, you must also purchase pieces that work well with your skin tone. Know your skin tone and purchase clothing with the most flattering colours. If you have warm undertones, invest in pieces in shades of olive, yellow, brown, gold, and orange. For individuals with cool skin tones, wear garments in lavender, deep purple, emerald, bright blues, and pink.

Invest in classic pieces

One common styling mistake of many women, especially younger ones, is buying every on trend outfit they come across. Fashion trends come and go, so investing in classic apparel that can last for a long time is essential. You don't need to buy original pieces from big fashion brands, but they must be made from high-quality and sustainable materials. Choose versatile clothing with simple designs and clean lines. Find pieces you can wear on various occasions, and make sure to purchase from a reliable brand such as Dainty Jewells, as they offer unique and timeless pieces for women of all ages.

Wear accessories

Accessories play an essential role in completing your look, so make it a point to invest in premium ones. Whether it's a flashy scarf, a stylish belt, layers of necklaces, or a simple hat, wearing accessories can improve your look instantly.

Being able to look good every day takes constant practice. Take note of these styling tips, and remember to enjoy the entire process.

Are Hybrid Cars Worth It?

In 2023, you may still be on the fence about getting a hybrid car. With the petrol and diesel ban coming in 2030, when there will be no new combustion engine vehicles made in the UK, could now be the right time to try a hybrid car? You may already be on the hybrid hype as they are a good stepping stone between a fuel-powered car and electric cars.

If you’re looking to find out more about how hybrid cars work and how they could fit in with your lifestyle, the guide below has been designed to give you more insight.

How do hybrid cars work?

Hybrid cars are vehicles that use more than one form of propulsion, hence the name ‘hybrid’. They usually combine a small electric motor with a petrol engine but can also use a diesel engine too. There are different types of hybrid cars to choose from but the most popular tends to be a plug-in hybrid vehicle. A plug-in hybrid usually has a larger electric battery that can be recharged by plugging in your vehicle at home and using your household electricity supply. Hybrid cars can run purely on electricity, but the batteries are much smaller than EVs and can usually only provide around 30-40 miles of pure electric driving. After this, the petrol engine can be used to complete your journey.

What are the benefits of hybrid cars:

Lower fuel consumption. Thanks to the dual powertrain used in hybrid cars, there is less fuel used and you can instead use your electric motor to power the vehicle which helps to reduce fuel usage.
Lower emissions. When you use the electric motor, you aren’t releasing any harmful pollutants into the environment that are associated with petrol and diesel engines.
Lower purchase price than electric cars. It is true that fully electric vehicles can be much more expensive to buy than their petrol or diesel rivals, but hybrid cars are more competitively priced, and you can even use car finance to get a hybrid car too. Use a free car finance checker to see where you fall on the credit scale and see if a hybrid car would fit in with your budget.

Are there any downsides to owning a hybrid car?

There are so many benefits to owning a hybrid car, but it would be unfair to not consider a few factors that may be seen as downsides of getting a hybrid.

Higher purchase price. Whilst one of the benefits of getting a hybrid car over an electric one is the lower purchase price. It’s usually more expensive to get a hybrid car over a traditional petrol or diesel car.

Hybrid cars will be banned from 2035. At the moment, the sale of new hybrid cars will be banned from 2035. The petrol and diesel car ban was brought forward from 2035 to 2030 unexpectedly in a bid to help tackle climate change and it wouldn’t be surprising if the hybrid bam followed the same lead.

Limited electric range. If you want to get a hybrid car to help reduce your carbon footprint, it can be possible. However, electric cars have a limited range as their batteries are only small. If you travel within the mileage each day, then you could benefit from a full EV without the price tag, but they may not be as efficient as a combustion engine vehicle when on long trips or motorway driving.

Where can you buy a hybrid car?

Hybrid cars have been around for a number of years now. This means there can be plenty of hybrid cars to choose from. There are many new and used car hybrid models you can take advantage of from reputable dealerships, manufacturers, and private sellers too.

Can you get finance for a hybrid car?

If you’re eligible for car finance, you may be looking to spread the cost of a hybrid car. There are many ways to get a hybrid car on finance, whether you’re looking to head straight to the dealer or use a car finance broker, you can get a hybrid car with affordable monthly payments. Hybrid car finance works the same way as any other form of car finance too!

How To Travel With A Baby For A Hassle-Free Journey!

5 Tips to Make Traveling with Your Baby as Easy as Possible

Many new parents wonder whether or not to travel with a young baby and, if so, how to make the experience as pleasant as possible for everyone involved! Before we get into the tips you need, let’s cover the basics first.

So - while it’s technically possible to travel with a newborn (including via airplane), pediatrics specialists generally don’t recommend travelling with a baby younger than one week old and, instead, advise it’s best to limit travel until your little one is several months old. This is to avoid exposing your baby to large numbers of people and, therefore, a variety of viral illnesses or infections - this is the key concern.

It’s important to remember that there’s also a risk when traveling with a baby who is too young to have had their vaccines, as they won’t have protection against certain potentially serious illnesses.

baby looking out onto a lake

Check with your pediatrics doctor before travelling internationally for peace of mind.

However, if your baby is at least a few months old or if you really need to travel, then there are some tips to know that will make all the difference. Because - let’s face it - you’ve already got a lot on your plate without even thinking about a trip away from home. But you’ve got this - and we’ve got you.

The 5 Tips For Happy Traveling with a Baby

Prepare for Take-Off

Preparation is the key to happy travels! If you’re planning on flying, then remember that you’ll need to get the ok from both your pediatrics doctor and the carrier. Every carrier has its own policy; for example, some airlines require a baby under one week old to have a medical form signed by a physician in order to fly.

To make your trip as smooth as possible, make a list of all the things you’ll need to take ahead of time. As well as clothes, diapers, and bottles, don’t forget a car seat to use on the plane and a few familiar toys for your little one to help them feel more settled. It’s also important to be prepared for every eventuality: think about what would happen if your baby got sick en route or a flight was cancelled or delayed. A backup plan is a must!

Efficient packing is essential, especially when travelling with a baby. It's important to consider both the quantity of items needed and your own comfort while navigating through airports with a baby in tow. Selecting the right size of suitcase is key, a small suitcase might not hold everything for both of you, while a large one could be hard to handle. A medium-sized hard side suitcase with four wheels is a practical choice, offering a good balance between capacity and maneuverability. Additionally, using packing organizers or compression bags inside your suitcase can be a game-changer. These tools help to optimize space and keep your belongings well-arranged, which is especially helpful when packing for more than one person. This method not only makes packing more efficient but also eases the process of unpacking and organizing your items throughout your journey.

If you can, get seats on a non-stop, off-peak flight - and remember to bring along your baby’s birth certificate as proof of her age if you need it. If you can, bag a window seat: if your baby will be on your lap this means that any flailing little arms and legs won’t risk getting in the way of flight attendants or other passengers going up and down the aisles.

Comfortable Car Travel

It’s super important to factor in sleep deprivation if you’re planning on undertaking a car journey with a very young baby: a well-rested driver is a safer driver. Your baby will need to travel in a safe, rear-facing car seat; why not stick some pictures to the back of the seat, so your little one has something interesting to look at on the way?

baby looking out on view

Car travel with a baby is challenging, but our tips can help ease the stress!

Keep the sun off your baby’s face using a car window shade or a wide-brimmed hat, and allow for plenty of rest stops for feeding, diaper changing, and simply allowing your bundle of joy to stretch out their legs.

Some babies love music, and this can be a great way to keep them entertained in the car - although you may find you need to play the same song two dozen times if your little one is enjoying it! You could also create a playlist of lullabies to put on for when your baby shows signs of becoming sleepy.

Staying in a Hotel

If you’ll be staying in a hotel as part of your travels, then, again, preparation is the key to success! So, pack a nightlight and also electrical outlet covers along with all the basics you’ll need - and extras - for an overnight stay.

It’s a great idea to ring the hotel ahead of time to see if they have a temporary refrigerator they could put in your room, as many establishments are happy to do so for a small additional charge. If you won’t be taking your own portable crib, then ensure that the crib provided by the hotel meets all safety standards.

Here are a couple of extra handy little hints that’ll help keep your stress levels as low as possible. Firstly, ask for a room on the lower level of the hotel to make getting in the luggage easier and, secondly, find out where the nearest shop is for picking up diapers and other essential supplies, and check out the restaurant menu to see if it has baby-friendly food available.

Get Set for International Travel

If you’ll be travelling even further afield then there are even more things to consider - but it can be done! As well as all the extra packing, it’s vital to ensure that your baby’s vaccinations are up to date and also to check with your pediatrics doctor whether any additional vaccinations are needed for the country you’ll be visiting.

As well as sorting out a passport for your baby, it’s also a great idea to look at family travel insurance plans that offer free cover for children. Plus, if you’re a single parent, it’s highly recommended that you carry a notarized letter from the child’s other parent confirming that they give permission for the baby to travel overseas.

Plan ahead for happy, hassle-free family travel!

We all know that there’s a direct correlation between how well a baby is sleeping and his parents’ happiness, and crossing time zones could put this equilibrium at risk…but there’s a solution! If your baby’s old enough to be on a sleep schedule, start making slight adjustments a few days before the trip to make things easier once you arrive. When you get to your destination, try to keep your little one in brightly lit areas during the daytime to further help them align with the new time zone.

Think About Your Expectations

And this final tip could save you a lot of stress. If it’ll be your first vacation or trip away with your baby, managing expectations is vital. You may feel under some pressure to make the holiday as exciting and fabulous as the breaks you enjoyed as a child-free couple. And the vacation can be just as wonderful - but in a different way.

So, plan to have a slower-paced holiday to avoid having an over-tired, grouchy baby on your hands and a stressful time. If there are several spots you’d like to visit, schedule seeing just one place or attraction per day, and factor in plenty of time to have relaxed fun with your little one, too. And if you can plan travel around nap times, even better! Ultimately, having an adaptable, ‘let’s roll with it’ attitude will pay dividends. Because, let’s face it: there’s going to be a diaper explosion, a spit-up incident, or a prolonged crying fit while everyone on the plane is trying to sleep - accepting this ahead of time is not only liberating but means you’ll be more likely to deal with such situations stoically when they occur.

Plan Ahead for a Relaxed Family Trip

Travelling with a baby may be challenging, but with some forward planning, it may be easier than you think. Take care of the basics by checking with your pediatrics team before undertaking a long journey, air travel, or a trip abroad, and make sure that all your little one’s vaccines are up to date.

Plan your trip - as far as possible - in a way that takes into account your baby’s schedule and personality. For example, if your baby tends to be unsettled in the late afternoon, then avoid beginning a long car journey at this time. If your baby likes a long sleep mid-morning, then this is the perfect time to hit the road!

It can be tempting to overpack, which can cause a hassle in itself when you have to lug everything into your hotel at the end of your journey. While it’s important to pack the things you need, it’s a good idea to only pack enough diapers for a few days, for example, and plan on picking up additional supplies once you’ve reached your destination.

One of the most important things to do is take the pressure off yourself. Your baby may become grouchy, there could well be a few hiccups along the way, and you may find yourself needing to feed your baby when you weren’t expecting to break your journey for another hour. If any (or all) of these things happen, trust your intuition, and know that you’re more than capable of handling these challenges.

Happy travelling! And if you’ve enjoyed this article, check out more at themonkeymashup.com - we’d love to have you visit!

Consider Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Everyone gets stuck between many variations in flooring, from classic hardwood to laminate and beyond. The biggest stumbling block in choosing one usually is because there seems to be no shortage of styles and designs that could be right in choice. You may have a good idea of what pattern and style you want to run through the home, but the practicality may not be as it should be in your deciding factor.

If you want authenticity in the look but with minimal effort in keeping it looking the way it should, then Quick Step flooring is the winning option. But when stepping into the area of luxury vinyl flooring, you may not fully understand what you want from it.

Space

flooring

A positive of choosing the vinyl option is that it is perfect for any space you want to install.

When installed in an active family room, a bustling kitchen or a shared bathroom, you witness many of the benefits at play. To help, you can obtain samples to showcase what they would look like in each space from providers. Vinyl will open up a lot of consideration into how furniture would co-exist in the room, how light compliments the area and how the choice of tiles or planks plays into the environment.

It is a fantastic choice for regular bathrooms and kitchens due to its practical and protective safeguards against water spills and rising temperatures.

Installation

Before installing any vinyl flooring, you prep the subfloor to ensure it is perfectly level, stable and moisture free. Once finished and dry, your vinyl can be installed by a professional or yourself.

It will require an adhesive recommended by the supplier or brand, or click vinyl is as simple as clicking together planks via a locking system. We recommend hiring a reputable fitter to install either way - unless you have someone who is a dab hand within the home. Avoid stepping on the floor for 48 hours after being fit into the room, allowing it to settle before the furniture is returned to the room.

Care

vinyl flooring

Quick-Step luxury vinyl is massively popular due to its ease of care and maintenance.

Luxury vinyl flooring, such as oak vinyl flooring, can be cared for with a soft brush for sweeping and a quick mop with a regular household cleaner (though check if the cleaning product contains any wax mixture - this will affect your wear layer with regular use). When cleaning, it is best to avoid using steam or heat-assisted mops due to weakening the adhesive and causing your planks or tiles to come unglued.

These are the three main core areas you need to know to enjoy Quick-Step luxury vinyl, and you should always consult a professional to make the best choice for your needs.

Top 5 Benefits of Reading Before Bed

Sleep has become a luxury for people these days. Falling asleep quickly sounds like a beautiful dream. Many adults complain about disturbed sleep at night or struggle with insomnia. Multiple factors are responsible for our deteriorated quality of sleep. Stress, unhealthy eating habits, and using digital devices before bed are some of the root cause of this problem.

woman reading in bed

If you want to enjoy a relaxing and deep sleep, why not adopt one simple habit: reading before bed. Not only will it reduce your screen time, but it will also provide you with plenty of other benefits. Take a look at the top 5 mind-blowing benefits of bedtime reading:

1. It Calms Your Nerves

Weekdays are often challenging for everyone. We worry about our work, college, deadlines, and the unfinished tasks of the week. This increases anxiety and stresses our brain, heart, and muscles. Consequently, falling asleep and enjoying a quality night of sleep becomes harder.

Reading for a few minutes before sleeping diverts your attention towards the book’s content and temporarily makes you forget about your problems. This, in return, helps your muscles relax, allowing you to fall asleep comfortably.

Moving on to the 2nd benefit:

2. Reduces Screen Time Before Bed

Digital devices emit blue-wavelength light that suppresses the sleep hormone melatonin. This blue light tricks the brain into thinking it’s daytime and keeps it awake. Prolonged use of smart devices before bed reduces melatonin and makes it harder to fall asleep.

Switching from using cell phones to reading books can prevent exposure to blue light. Before bed, keep your cell phone away and pick a nice book. Trust me; your brain will thank and reward you with a refreshing sleep.

Next, on number 3, I will discuss another significant benefit of reading before bed.

3. Improves Focus

Did you know that in the last 15 years, our attention span has shrunk considerably to 8.25 seconds? You would be surprised to learn that goldfish have a larger attention span than humans. There are multiple factors behind depleting attention spans; however, the most common cause is multitasking during the day. Many employees and students juggle several tasks simultaneously. As a result, their minds cannot concentrate on a single thing for too long.

However, reading at night focuses all your concentration on the book’s content or plot. You can reread the lines you like without rushing or jumping to the next thing. This disciplines your focus which prevents you from getting distracted easily.

Another significant benefit you can avail of from being a bedtime reader is that it encourages you to learn new things.

4. Expands Your Knowledge

Plenty of adults restrict their learning and intellectual growth once they finish their studies. They complain about the scarcity of time to learn new things. However, taking some time out of your day to read before bed can significantly improve your life. By reading different genres of books by various authors, you can discover new facts and data which can inadvertently improve your life.

Many renowned leaders, businesswomen, writers and celebrities unwind from their busy day by reading. One such individual, a prominent writer and journalist Margaret Fuller had a famous quote:

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

Understanding the underlying meaning of this quote can help you become an influential leader in life, at work, in your community and even among your peers.

5. Helps You Fall Asleep Faster and Deeper

Many people feel lethargic and irritated after waking up. They remain sleepy most of the day and cannot give their best. The reason behind their low energy levels is their poor sleep at night. Reading relaxes your mind, relieves muscle tension, and doesn’t disrupt melatonin production.

When your mind is at ease, you fall asleep much faster. Moreover, you do not wake up frequently and enjoy undisturbed and rejuvenating sleep.

The Bottom Line

Our habits are like an investment; they not only shape our lives but also determine the quality of our future. Hence, try to develop positive habits that will reap immense benefits in your present and later stages. Make books your best friend to enjoy all the above-listed benefits. Start by reading a few lines every day before bed; soon, it will become your habit.

Five Islands Worth Checking Out In The Carribbean

The Caribbean is one of the true paradises on our planet. With its incredible beaches, magnificent food, and its laid-back lifestyle, it's not hard to see why this region is so popular with travellers. In fact, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, the Caribbean is growing in popularity, having received an estimated 32.0 million international tourist arrivals in 2019, 4.4% or some 1.3 million more than the 30.7 million in 2018.

However, the Caribbean is made up of many different islands and it is sometimes hard for people to choose which one to visit. After all, each destination offers so much!

Antigua

To help you with this decision, I have rounded up a handful of my favourite Caribbean islands to give you some insight into what makes them so special.

1. Barbados

Barbados is the most easterly island in the region, and it offers a dual experience to its visitors. On the eastern side of the island, the Atlantic waves smash against its shoreline, giving it more of a powerful, atmospheric look than your typical Caribbean landscape.

2. Antigua

Antigua is a stunning island with numerous paradise beaches on offer. Palm trees dot its shoreline and blue, tranquil water laps gently in and out as the sun beats down on you. Furthermore, if you’re a history fan, then it’s worth taking a trip to English Harbour, where you can explore the island’s former function as the UK’s biggest Caribbean naval base. There are even some relics left behind that make for interesting viewing.

3. Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is an island of pure natural beauty. It has verdant rainforests, beautiful mountains, and a huge reserve (Edmund Forest Reserve) that all provide a wonderful backdrop for nature lovers and hikers alike. There is a lot of protected habitat on the island that helps to support its large number of bird species, whilst a drive-by volcano gives you the opportunity to explore its crater from within. Then there are the magnificent Pitons—two enormous volcanic mountains that are UNESCO listed.

4. Grenada

Like many islands in this area, Grenada was formed from ancient volcanic activity. This fertile landscape has led to the island being used for tropical fruit growing, as well as countless flowers and spices. Its beautiful hills and valleys are laden with nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon and cacao, mixed with fruit fields and orchards. This has given the island its nickname—the Spice Isle.

5. Jamaica

Famous for its reggae music and its offbeat style, this is an island to visit if you enjoy a truly relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. It is full of unique architecture, interesting small hideouts and characterful towns and villages.

As you can see, there are a multitude of islands in the Caribbean worth visiting – but why limit yourself to just one? If you can’t make up your mind about which islands to visit in the area, why not consider going on a cruise of the region? Silversea Cruises offer excellent opportunities to see the best of the Caribbean, stopping off at various islands on your journey – and with their expert guidance, you will never miss out on anything.

And there you have it – just 5 islands in the Caribbean that are worth exploring on your next vacation.

5 Tips For Looking Airbrushed Without That Instagram Filter

Instagram filters are amazing at making us look gorgeous, with perfect makeup and unreal skin. Unreal because well, it simply is not real. But don’t worry - you won’t be needing that Instagram filter to make you look airbrushed anymore!

What even is an ‘airbrushed look’ you may ask?

woman

Although some people may point towards the airbrush machine, this isn’t exactly what we mean when we say ‘airbrushed’. Instead, an ‘airbrushed look’ refers to the effect of the airbrush tool, but without the use of the machine itself. Smooth, flawless, and radiant skin.

These 5 useful tips will help you achieve a real flawless, airbrushed look without the assistance of an Instagram filter.

Skincare

Prepping your skin before makeup application is a crucial step in making your airbrushed dreams come true, so make sure that you stick with a consistent skincare routine!

For those with dry skin, exfoliating once to twice a week can help you get rid of dry and flaky patches of skin. Meanwhile, those with oily skin may find solace in mattifying skin care products.

Makeup artist, Ariel Tejada, who’s worked with the likes of Kylie Jenner and Shay Mitchell, recommends using a gel moisturiser and sheer highlighter when prepping the skin. Even adding a bit of oil can help foundation blend more seamlessly into your skin!

Patience is a virtue

After your skincare regime, you should wait a couple of minutes to let all of the hydrating and moisturising factors sink into your skin before applying makeup. If you’re in a rush, we know that this step can be painstakingly annoying, but it’s important to allow your skin to absorb the nutrients of your skincare products. Once you’ve waited several minutes, then you can go ahead and start applying your makeup products.

Blend, and then blend some more

The key to an airbrushed look is the blending process - just like preventing cakey or patchy makeup, you want to ensure that you blend thoroughly, particularly if you use foundation. We suggest blending with a damp beauty sponge to ‘blur’ out areas that start to look like they’re cracking after you’ve applied your foundation by gently dabbing, no swiping!

Light coverage is best

When it comes to an airbrushed look, you’ll want to opt for a less is more approach, which is why light coverage foundations are ideal for this type of look. You can even build up more if you feel that it’s too light. For an even more airbrushed look, opt for a super smoother blurring skin tint or instead of foundation to help you achieve a natural and effortless makeup base that enhances your skin.

Set!

The final step to an airbrushed makeup look is to set everything! If you’ve used airbrushed Instagram filters before, you’ll know that each filter has super smooth skin to the point it looks blurred, which is exactly what you need to replicate in real life.

An airbrushed appearance is typically semi-matte, so you should pick from translucent setting powders and hydrating setting sprays. Use a sponge to lightly dab setting powder into areas of your skin that tend to crease the most, especially under the eye!
