Siddùra Erema Cannonau di Sardegna DOC

red wine label

The red wine they sent to me was Siddùra Erema Cannonau di Sardegna DOC. Siddùra is located in the north of Sardinia and is one of the great Italian wineries there. They are so well thought of that they have won Decanter Gold, Silver, Bronze and Platinum medals every year since 2013. Decanter awards are well-respected world wine awards given for the quality of wine. Competition is high for these awards and to win even a bronze award takes some work.

The Erema wine itself is made from Cannonau, a Meditteranean black grape variety thought to be one of the oldest in the Med. The wine was hand-harvested, left to soften for two weeks in grape juice then fermented in steel tanks. This helps produce complex strong flavours. The wine was then aged in oak barrels for 12 months before being bottled in 2018.

This Erema wine is rich and flavourful. They say the berries from the Cannonau grape are rich in anti-oxidants and you can almost feel it doing you good! I could pick up berries, like blackberries and blackcurrants in the flavour and the richness of plums without the sweetness. It was quite acidic and dry and felt strong when drunk with a bit of a kick. It has a strength of 14%. I feel this wine would go well with rich winter casseroles, a cheeseboard and spicy curries. Of course, this win was also tasty when drunk on its own.

  2. I prefer a fruity flavor so this sounds like a wine that's more suited to my taste then some that I've had in the past.
