As fashion has changed through the years, so has swimwear styles. From the high waisted bikinis of the '40s and 50's film stars to the high legged swimsuits worn in the '80s by Pamela Anderson on the Baywatch beach to the sports style bikinis of athletes today, made for performance as well as style.
Swimsuits years ago were modestly cut and covered much of the female form. Then they got smaller and smaller to the barely-there bikini and cut out swimsuit. Today the 50's styles have come back around in fashion, popularised by stars such as Dita Von Teese. Retro is cool again.
Yet fashion today is not defined by the era as it was years ago. There aren't rules any more, and I would say wear what suits your sense of style, and your body shape. To some, comfort is of the utmost importance and this is where sports style bikinis and classic swimsuits would suit, whilst to others wearing as little as possible to get that all-over tan is important, so the barely-there swimsuit or a fringed or teeny weeny bikini would be their choice. If you are worried about your tummy then a high waisted bikini or corset-style swimsuit will hold you in and be supportive.
So wear what swimwear you like, there is a lot of choice today, and have fun by the pool or on the beach!
What style of swimsuit do you wear?

DeleteI think the 80s style high leg swimsuit is making a comeback and from what I've seen so far it looks surprisingly flattering!
ReplyDeleteI think you have to make sure you attend to the bikini line if you go for a high leg swimsuit :)
DeleteI'm definitely a high waisted or corset type. Anything to hold the tum in a bit more! X
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. I also love swimsuits with little skirts. They are playful and fun.
DeleteSarongs are useful to cover the wobbly bits :)
ReplyDelete1950s all the way for me!
ReplyDeleteI like it that 50's fashion has become in style again.
DeleteThis is such a great post and interesting to see where each style has come from. I really am loving the high waisted style for this season. I think the cut out swimsuit sometimes looks amazing but I really wouldn't want those tan lines! xo

I think you have to have a killer body or be very confident to carry a cut out swimsuit off.
